Upcoming Event Spring Exhibition
Art & Design: A Conversation opens in the main gallery at YJ Contemporary Fine Art on March 15. The exhibition presents artwork and furniture from eight local contemporary artists and artisans. Selected works by Rhode Island and Massachusetts based artists Marjorie Hellman, Tayo Heuser, Marc Mazzarelli and Conny Goelz Schmitt include paintings on aluminum, canvas, and wood, as well as drawings and paper collages. The pieces complement furniture designed and built by established artisans John Dunnigan, Gail Fredell, Tyler Inman and Timothy Philbrick. The exhibition celebrates the shared process of geometric spatial reasoning used to produce abstract, two dimensional pieces and functional, three dimensional pieces.
The artists’ works will be interspersed throughout the gallery encouraging dialogue and cross-connection to transpire – developing conversational comparisons between art and design. Art & Design: A Conversation will be the first exhibition at YJ Contemporary to feature abstract art in a variety of mediums – drawing, collage, painting – and the first exhibition at the gallery featuring studio furniture by local designers and artisans.
